Big vs. Small: Local or Global?

Fast food chains, despite the myriad problems documented by the author, have an undeniable appeal:  they are convenient and offer inexpensive and tasty food. Even if you are disturbed by the practices of these corporations, could you realistically swear off their food, given its ubiquity and mainstream appeal? If you are driving home from work, tired and hungry, and your two choices are a familiar fast food restaurant or an unknown mom-and-pop, which would you choose? Explain your choice. What kinds of implications about teens and society in general does this choice have?

Then, describe the differences between the old time Ronald McDonald pictures and the newer (improved?) ones that you found yesterday!

Language 4: Your Fast Food History

According to a large multi-center study funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and published in the January 1, 2005 issue of The Lancet, the more frequently teenagers eat at fast-food restaurants the more likely they are to gain more weight and have a greater incidence of insulin resistance in early middle age. In fact, on a typical day, almost one third of adolescents eat at fast food restaurants.

Write about your fast food eating history.  Do you eat fast food?  Why or why not? What is your favorite fast food restaurant?  What time of day do you typically eat fast food?  How many times a week?  What do you like about these establishments?  What are your thoughts on the massive amount information about the ill-effects on your health?  What is the worst thing about fast food?  Do you plan to ever change your eating habits?  Do you think you are addicted to junk food, or could you stop eating it completely?  Would you consider not eating fast food ever again?  Is that realistic?

Please answer in ONE paragraph, using complete sentences and correct, standard English.  After you post your response, comment on AT LEAST ONE of your classmates’ posts, either agreeing and adding something new to his/her post or disagreeing respectfully and explaining why you do not agree.
